Welcome to our children’s activities at St. John’s Church

We have an exciting programme of events throughout the week with our preschool groups and we also have groups at our weekly Sunday afternoon service (Soul Food). Plus we are part of the open the book team doing weekly school assemblies and during the year with family play sessions.

Soul Kids and Soul Youth (every Sunday afternoon)

Soul Kids is our children's ministry at our 4.30pm Sunday Soul Food service at St. John’s Church, Peasedown.

Proverbs 22:6 says; “Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it”. Our vision at SOUL KIDS is to partner with parents to raise children to be ready, equipped and willing for all that God has called them to be and do. We want to train and nurture each child through the Word and Spirit from an early age to enable them to develop a deep relationship with God.

We also want each child to know their value in God, His love for them and to recognise and use the gifts and abilities that He has given them. We have two groups that meet on a Sunday;

  • Babies and Pre-Schoolers children are welcome to use the SJ’s Garden area inside the church with the toys, books etc under parental supervision during the service.

  • Primary School children aged 4-10 are welcome to come out to a supervised group Soul Kids each Sunday in the church hall. To help us prepare, can you book in your child for each Sunday by clicking on the box titled “Book in for Soul Kids & Youth this Sunday”.

  • Year 6 and above are welcome to come out to a supervised Soul Youth group each week. .

Open the book assemblies

Members of Peasedown St John's three churches, St Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Peasedown Methodist Church and St John's Anglican Church have formed a team to go into Peasedown Primary School every week to lead 'Open the Book' assemblies.

Team member, Rev David Winstanley, said; "Open the Book is a way of telling and acting out Bible stories in a fun way, using the Lion Storyteller Bible. Adults and children dress up to tell the story, there is a short time of reflection after the story and a short prayer, but it is all about letting the stories speak for themselves."

Open the Book' teams go into many primary schools all around the country, using material from the Bible Society. We do the same story 2 weeks in a row - once for the older children, once for the younger children.

 "We're really grateful for the welcome we have received from the school and for the children who help with the music and projecting up images; and the enthusiasm of the children who take part." added Fiona Carr.

Stories this year have included the Creation story, Adam and Eve, Noah, Abraham, Joseph, and Moses.

Rev Shaula Reilly said, "There was a wonderful moment recently when we were telling the story of Moses leading the people out of slavery in Egypt across the Red Sea - the children sitting on the floor (representing the sea) all moved as one to create a path down the middle without any prompting and then instinctively moved together to close the gap and 'swallow up' the army who were pursuing them."
